I've participated in Drawlloween for a few years now, but to be honest the prompts are getting a little tired. I don't want to draw the same things every single year. I'd never done Inktober before, so this year I decided to make my own list; drawing from both lists and including my own things. I mean there's only so many times I want to illustrate Mummies, Creatures From the Black Lagoon, Vampires, & Frankenstein, ya know. The very first year that I participated in Drawlloween I drew a lot of extras that weren't on the list. The Huli Jing was one, which is the seven fox tailed trickster spirit from China, which is pictured above. It was nice to see it make an appearance on this years' Drawlloween list, but as I'd already drawn her, I didn't want to again. If you would like to see past Drawlloween's, just click here and scroll through the second photo slideshow (as it contains years 2016 - 2018). If you're curious, here were this years lists for both Drawlloween & Inktober. And here's my very worked through list. Also most of my drawing paper was too large for the scanner, so the images were cut short or there's greying. I did the best I could do. Could easily scan in the 4x4 square papers no problem. Day 01:: Nora The Nun (addition) She's a Welsh ghost legend. She was (apparently) a nun who lived in the 12th or 13th century. She was staying at Ewloe Castle in Wepre Woods in Northern Wales. She had an illicit affair with a guardsman & was with child. She hid her baby in a tree trunk after being discovered, when she came back it was gone & she drowned herself. She's said to haunt the waterfall & is faceless & angry. Day 02:: Catacombs (Drawlloween) Day 03:: Folk Horror (Inktober) It's from the film, The Village. Day 04:: Faeries & Goblins (Inktober) The Peri is a winged Persian being that is mischievous & allergic to iron. They can also make themselves invisible. The Chaneque is an Aztec creature, a small goblin sprite; an elemental force & guardian of nature. Day 05:: Huntress (Drawlloween) Banka-Mundi is the Hindu Goddess of the Hunt (& Fertility). Day 05:: Deer Woman (addition) She's found in various tribes' mythology, but I focused on the Chippewa/Ojibwe. She loves to dance & will join unnoticed. She also lures promiscuous young men into the forests... to their deaths! She can be banished by chanting, tobacco smoke, or simply noticing that her feet aren't human. Day 07:: Huaka'i pō (addition) The Spirit Ranks of Hawaii. On certain nights, they'll rise from the graves & the ocean & march to meet each other in battle once more. Their feet never touch the ground. If you watch them marching or witness the battles, they'll kill you: unless one of the spirits is your ancestor, you immediately avert your eyes or lay on the ground, or if you show them the great respect they deserve. Apparently, the first written account of them is by Captain Cook in 1778? But several accounts have him writing it in 1883, almost 100 years after his death in Hawaii. :/ Day 08:: Mama D'Leau (addition) Mother of the River. She is a river entitity of Trinidad & Tobago. She protects all the water & the creatures within. She is a beautiful woman with blond hair & the body of a snake. She brushes her hair with her golden comb & if you anger her, her hair will turn into snakes. She is the wife of Papa Bois (day 13). Day 09:: Coven (Drawlloween) The Witch Dance. This is a legend & a place in Mississippi; up near Houston & the hauntingly beautiful Tishomingo State Park. It is said that witches would dance here & everywhere they touched the ground is ruined & nothing will grow. Day 10:: Ancient Tale (Inktober) Namazu (Ōnamazu) is a giant catfish that lives underneath the islands of Japan. The god Kashima is responsible for keeping him weighted down by a giant stone. But, Namazu always breaks free & thrashes around wildly, causing havoc above. He is the ancient explanation of earthquakes. Day 11:: Tarot (Drawlloween) Day 12:: Cryptid (Drawlloween) The Snallygaster is a dragon-like beast (body of a lizard, wings & head of a bird, metal beak with metal teeth... & tentacles). Seven pointed stars reputedly keep it at bay. It's said to inhabit Central Maryland. The early German settlers named it 'Schneller Geist' meaning quick ghost/spirit. It's only enemy is the Dwayyo (which is like a wolf-man). Day 13:: Papa Bois (addition) Father of the Woods. He is a forest entity of Trinidad & Tobago. He protects all the woods & the creatures within. He is an old man, of African descent, who has horns, cloven hooves, & a beard of leaves. He can run faster than a deer & uses a hollowed-out bulls horn to warn the animals of danger. His wife is Mama D'Leau (day 08). You must refrain from staring at his hooves & be polite; it's best to greet him with, "Bonjour, vieux Papa" which means "Hello/Good day Old Father." Day 14:: Moth (Inktober) Day 15:: Davy Jones (addition) He is the devil of sailors. The spirit of the oceans. Possibly a real pirate who was active in the 1630s. The bringer of death & the keeper of the dead on the seas. Day 16:: Poison Plant (Drawlloween) The Bracken Fern (Pteridium aquilinum), of which the Southern variety grows where I live. Though people have eaten the fiddleheads & rhizomes, this plant is toxic in large amounts. In both humans & animals it can cause the following: thiamin deficiency, hemorrhaging, weakness, retinal degeneration, blindness, esophageal, stomach, & bladder cancers, & death. Day 17:: Tatzelwurm (Drawlloween) Der Tatzelwurm is a stubby dragon creature with a cat-like head who dwells in the Alps. Some accounts give 2 forelegs or 4 legs. It measures .30 - 2.13 metres. They are said to have poison breath or even venom & are known to hiss. Tatzelwurm (Claw Worm) is the Bavarian & Austrian name. You'll also hear Bergstutz (Mountain Stump) in these areas. It is known as Stollenwurm (dragon of the mine-tunnels) in Switzerland, & Arassas in France, which is probably an imitation of its sound since that isn't a French word. Day 18:: Will-o-the-Wisp (Drawlloween) The ghost lights of India & Pakistan are called Chir Batti. They are bright orbs that change from blue to red to yellow & back again. They lure people off into the jungle or desert. No one has seen them up close & come back to tell about it. Day 19:: Haunted Forest (Drawlloween) Hoia-Baicu Forest (Pădurea Hoia in Romanian & Hója-erdő in Hungarian) is considered "The Bermuda Triangle of Romania". It is reported to have spirits & other entities lurking in the trees. All sorts of supernatural happenings including Extra Terrestrial visitations allegedly happen here. And there's a clearing where nothing grows. But it's also apparently a lovely recreation area? Day 20:: Moon (Drawlloween) Day 21:: Skondhokatas (addition) These are spirits from West Bengal, India, as well as Bangladesh, who had loves their heads due to train accidents. They are constantly seeking their lost heads & will hunt you for yours. It's not enough though, as the cycle will continue until they find their actual disembodied head (which, apparently never happens?). Day 22:: Siren (Drawlloween) Lorelei is a nymph of German lore who would sit atop the steep rock (known as The Lorelei or also spelled Loreley), along the shores of The Rhine River. She wore white & a wreath of stars in her hair & would sing her siren song, luring all the men to crash their boats into the rock & drown. There is even a statue dedicated to her near Wiesbaden. Day 23:: Kelpie (Drawlloween) These are not cats, but water demons from Scotland. They can appear as a male human with horse hooves & pond weeds in their hair. But they are generally horses. They'll lure you to mount & then drag you to the depths where they eat you, crunching your bones which sometimes entangle in their manes. If you can obtain their bridle, they won't eat you & can do stuff for you (though I wouldn't risk it!). So, what's with the cat? It's my cat, Yata. He likes water & dark, damp places; his eyes turn black & he tilts his head creepily; he crunches bones of shrews he has caught. He is a fae. I say I have his bridle & remind him that he can't eat us. His pictures on Instagram have their own hashtag - #kelpiekitten Day 24:: La Llorona (Drawlloween) The Weeping Woman. There are regional variances in Latin America, but in Mexico she was Maria, a poor but beautiful woman in her village. She ended up marrying the wealthy stranger that arrived in town. He traveled a lot & upon returning he would only spend time with his children. Maria was jealous and drowned her sons in the river. She was overcome with grief of what she'd done & then drowned herself. Now she wanders around wailing & weeping, dressed in white, crying, "Ay mis hijos!". She'll steal other children at night thinking they are hers. Some believe that her cries are a warning of death like The Banshee of Ireland. Day 25:: Näkki (addition) This water spirit goes by many names in Germanic & Scandinavian countries (Neck, Nixe, Nøkke, Nøkken, Nikker) with various attributes but with one final end - they drown & eat humans. In Finland it is the Näkki who appears as a beautiful woman (or a silver fish, a horse, or a hound) in order to lure Finish children into their murky waters. They are, in truth, very hairy & very ugly beneath that water in their real forms. Day 26:: The 3-Legged Lady of Nash Road (addition) This is another urban legend out of my home state of Mississippi. Whether the lady in question was looking for her dead husband, lover, or child; all she found was a rotting leg, which she then sewed to her hip. Before the little church on Nash Road burned down, you could knock on the door three times & she'd appear. She'd race you down the road, slamming into your car the entire way. Now one only needs to go to the spot & honk three times. It's said that if she overtakes you, she'll kill you. Apparently this ending has never happened. Day 27:: Haunted House (Inktober) This is from a reoccuring nightmare that I used to have. I'd exit off a hallway into this main hall. I'm at the foot of this massive staircase that rises 20 or 30 feet into the air before reaching a landing. There are hallways beside it leading to back portions of the house & on the walls in this main hall are fancy opera boxes & dead people spirits EVERYWHERE. Just hovering, floating, zooming; in & out of the opera boxes & on the stairs. They keep flickering with a blue light. I'm supposed to go up the stairs & to the left down a hall. I was always petrified standing there, knowing I had to go up, knowing the spirits couldn't know I was there or they'd eat me. I always somehow made it upstairs but to a bedroom with flickering lights & that room was so scary, I didn't want to know what was there or why I was there to find out/see it, so I would end up jumping myself to a new portion of dream to escape that room. This dream is my maternal grandmothers house, though it's nothing like her house in grandeur, though her house was creepy. Day 28:: Cemetery (Inktober) My families' headstones. We always leave offerings of rocks (to show that we have visited), & we pour coffee for them over the grass underneath the headstones. My brother also gets a cigarette. We burn a stick of incense for them as well. (That's maternal grandfather, maternal grandmother, & brother from left to right.) Day 29:: Black Coffee (Inktober) Day 30:: Dungeon (Inktober) Day 31:: Frankenstein (Drawlloween)
I'm not a fan of Frankenstein (you know it's the monster she's referring to) & I drew the monster once and didn't want to again. Thought of collaging my own Frankenstein('s monster), so I did.
